Takayu Onsen Fukushima is located in the Zaō mountain area west of Fukushima City, in the volcanic highlands at around 750 metres elevation — a high-altitude resort area where sulphurous hot springs emerge from the volcanic geology in dense mountain forest, just 14 kilometres from Fukushima Station in a setting of complete mountain immersion that contrasts dramatically with the urban landscape below. The intensely sulphurous thermal waters of Takayu have been documented since at least the 11th century and are classified as a milky-white opaque acidic sulphur spring — one of the most therapeutically potent and visually distinctive types of Japanese onsen — whose strong hydrogen sulphide and sulphur mineral content provides powerful skin and respiratory therapeutic effects. Takayu's traditional cluster of wooden ryokan and bathhouses set in a volcanic clearing of beech forest preserves an atmosphere of ancient onsen culture remarkably unchanged from historical descriptions, making it one of Fukushima's most authentically historical and therapeutically intense hot spring retreats.
