Barskoon Hot Springs is a natural thermal site in the Barskoon gorge area of the Issyk-Kul Region, Kyrgyzstan, where bicarbonate springs emerge near the spectacularly scenic canyon carved by the Barskoon River as it descends from the Tian Shan highlands into the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul. The gorge road, which leads past multiple waterfalls to a high-altitude plateau used as a training ground by Soviet cosmonauts, passes through some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Central Asia before reaching the thermal spring site. The bicarbonate waters, known for their digestive and skin-soothing properties, are used by local Kyrgyz herders and increasingly by trekkers and tourists discovering the extraordinary natural wealth of the Issyk-Kul basin.

Insider tip — Barskoon Hot Springs feed from bicarbonate-mineral groundwater in the Barskoon Gorge, which cuts through the Terskey Alatau mountains on the southern rim of Issyk-Kul lake and leads toward high-altitude pastures used by nomadic herders.
