Birštonas Kurort

Birstonas Kurort is a historic mineral spa town in the Nemunas bend valley of central Lithuania, drawing chlorurated saline springs from the deep sedimentary formations of the Baltic basin in a landscape defined by the extraordinary Nemunas river meander that curves 270 degrees around the spa town's peninsula, creating a horseshoe of forested bluffs and river beach that makes Birstonas one of the most scenically distinctive spa settings in the Baltic states. The spa tradition of Birstonas goes back to the sixteenth century when the Lithuanian Grand Duchy's nobility first exploited the mineral springs, and the resort was developed into a full-scale sanatorium complex during the Soviet period whose saline and chlorurated waters have been valued for cardiovascular comfort and muscular relaxation in a programme that continues today with modernised facilities. The Nemunas river valley surrounding Birstonas, with its forests of pine and oak, its river beaches, its cycling trails along the meander banks, and its proximity to the Puntukas boulder, a glacial erratic bearing a bas-relief portrait of the aviators Darius and Girenas who completed the first transatlantic flight from New York to Lithuania in 1933, gives the spa town a quiet national significance beyond its therapeutic function.
