Aïn Al Ati is a natural mineral spring near Erfoud in the Drâa-Tafilalet Region of southeastern Morocco, situated at the edge of the Sahara Desert near the Tafilalet oasis — one of the world's great palm oasis systems and the ancestral home of the Alaouite dynasty, Morocco's current royal family — where chloride-rich spring waters provide a welcome natural water resource in an otherwise hyper-arid desert landscape. The spring is embedded within the extraordinary Saharan archaeology of the Tafilalet basin, which encompasses the ruins of Sijilmasa — the great medieval Saharan trading city that was for centuries the northern terminus of the trans-Saharan gold and salt trade — and the fossil-rich Devonian limestone formations that have made Erfoud a world centre for fossil tourism. The chloride spring waters, emerging in the immensity of the Moroccan Saharan edge landscape, provide a rare natural focal point in a region where water in any form has always been extraordinarily precious.
