The Otgontenger Hot Springs in the Zavkhan province of western Mongolia are considered sacred by both Shamanist and Buddhist Mongolian traditions — the 4,008-metre Otgontenger peak of the Khangai range, above which these springs emerge, is regarded as the home of a powerful protective deity and one of Mongolia's four sacred mountains. The bicarbonate springs flow through the high steppe at altitude, used by nomadic herder communities for bathing and ritual in a landscape of extraordinary openness and sky — vast rolling hills without trees, eagle hunters on horseback and felt gers as the only human structures for hundreds of kilometres. Reaching Otgontenger requires genuine expedition preparation, but for those who make the journey, these springs offer a thermal experience unlike any other on Earth: ancient, sacred and set within one of the world's last truly nomadic landscapes.
