Tucked into the rolling steppe of Arkhangai province, the Tsenkher springs rise in the heart of central Mongolia, far from any paved road. For centuries, nomadic herders rode here on horseback to water their livestock and bathe, while shamanistic purification rituals took place at the site, the spring being revered as the dwelling of protective spirits in Mongolian tradition.

It wasn't until 1994 that the country's first tourist camp was built at Tsenkher, marking the site's post-Soviet opening — a turning point that gradually drew Japanese investment and international visitors. Today the setting still holds that striking contrast of traditional gers, roaming horses, and steaming pools cut into the valley slope, a resolutely nomadic take on wellness.

Insider tip — Tsenkher Hot Springs erupt at nearly 90°C from the steppe of central Mongolia's Arkhangai Province, forming one of Central Asia's most powerful natural thermal sites surrounded by rolling pastures and pine-capped hills. Several ger camps have built outdoor pools fed by the springs where visitors can soak beneath the vast Mongolian sky while horses graze nearby. The spring is most accessible in summer (June to August) when the dirt tracks across the steppe are passable, and the contrast between icy river bathing and hot pools is exhilarating.
