Aguas Termales de El Hoyo

Aguas Termales de El Hoyo is a natural thermal spring site near León in northwestern Nicaragua, located in close proximity to the dramatic Cordillera de los Maribios volcanic chain that runs parallel to the Pacific coast and includes some of Central America's most active and spectacular volcanoes, with Cerro Negro — the youngest and most active volcano in the Americas — lying just northeast of León and the Momotombo and Telica volcanic edifices completing a landscape of extraordinary geothermal energy that surfaces in the thermal springs of the El Hoyo volcanic complex. León itself is Nicaragua's second-largest city, a colonial university town of bright-painted cathedral architecture, revolutionary murals, and literary culture as the intellectual capital of Nicaragua and burial place of the poet Rubén Darío, whose modernist verse transformed Spanish-language poetry in the late 19th century. The sulfurous thermal waters here emerge from the geothermal systems of the El Hoyo volcanic field, offering bathing enriched by the powerful volcanic energy that defines Nicaragua's Pacific volcanic arc.
