Thermae 2000 in Valkenburg aan de Geul, Limburg, is the Netherlands' most significant natural thermal spa facility, drawing on genuine mineral springs in the only Dutch province with natural hills — the Heuvelland (Hill Country) of south Limburg, tucked between Belgium and Germany in a landscape of marl caves, vineyards and medieval castles quite unlike the flat Netherlands of tourist imagination. The bicarbonate mineral waters, emerging from the limestone karst of the Geul valley, are used in a large indoor-outdoor spa complex that is the Netherlands' most popular thermal destination. Valkenburg's remarkable cave system — a vast network of tunnels carved through soft marl over centuries for building material — includes the Gemeentegrot cavern, now used for concerts and events, and a unique cave castle. The proximity of the Belgian city of Liège, the German spa resort of Aachen and the medieval city of Maastricht make south Limburg one of the most conveniently multi-country wellness destinations in Europe.

Insider tip — The Valkenburg caves (medieval tuff quarries) are worth visiting — unique in combination with the baths.
