On the Coromandel Peninsula, Hot Water Beach owes its name to a rare geothermal quirk: at low tide, hot water rises through the sand, heated by ancient volcanic activity roughly two kilometres below the surface. Visitors dig their own pool here, just metres from the Pacific surf. The spot has long been recognised by Ngāti Hei, tangata whenua of Mercury Bay.
