In Bad Mergentheim, the Solymar-Therme draws on a heritage far older than the building itself: the Paulsquelle, a salt spring valued since the 19th century and regarded as one of the town's great treasures. This brine, a sodium-chloride water with a salt content of around 6 percent, feeds the pools after processing that brings its concentration down to roughly 3 percent.

The current complex has its roots in the Solymar leisure water park, which opened in 1975. Fully renovated between 2011 and 2014, it reopened on 3 October 2014 in its present form, combining recreational pools with saltwater basins within the traditional spa setting of the Tauber valley.

Insider tip — Solymar-Therme in Bad Mergentheim draws on one of Germany's most mineral-rich spring complexes in the Tauber valley, where Jurassic sediments yield naturally carbonated waters with iodine traces. The pools maintained at 34°C invite long, soothing soaks rather than thermal shock. The spa town's Deutschorden castle adds historical atmosphere, with the Tauber cycling route passing right through town. Weekend packages combining cycling, bathing, and Franconian wine tastings are popular with visitors.
