The story of the Jod-Sole Therme in Bad Bevensen began by chance: in 1964, an oil drilling operation nearly 3,000 metres deep uncovered an unsuspected iodine-rich brine. The spa company was founded in 1967, construction of the centre began the following year, and the pools opened in the summer of 1970. The spring received official state recognition on 13 May 1975.
This saline water rises from Eocene-era deposits, between 55.8 and 33.9 million years old, from depths of up to 700 metres, with a brine concentration of 10.3% and an iodide content of 3.6 mg/l. Since its official recognition, the site has remained the only mineral spring in the entire Lüneburg Heath, spread across more than 3,000 m² of leisure and relaxation space.
Insider tip — Jod-Sole Therme Bad Bevensen is renowned throughout northern Germany for its iodine-rich saline brine, one of the highest natural iodine concentrations of any German spa, making it particularly valuable for thyroid and respiratory conditions. The thermal complex includes multiple indoor and outdoor pools with varying salt concentrations, allowing visitors to choose their preferred intensity. Bad Bevensen earned its prestigious 'Bad' designation specifically on the strength of its iodine-brine resources. Spend at least two hours in the water to allow the iodine-saline minerals to fully penetrate the skin and airways.
