In Soltau, Lower Saxony, the Soltau-Therme draws its salt water from a depth of 216 metres, where the extracted brine reaches nearly 30% salt content before being diluted to around 3.5% in the pools. The site's history dates back to 1954, when an outdoor pool opened on the banks of the Böhme river; an indoor pool followed in 1973, and the actual Therme with salt bath and sauna opened in 1990.
Between 2012 and 2014, the facility underwent a major renovation that converted the indoor area into an all-weather pool with a retractable roof, reopening in summer 2014. Today the complex includes a 600 m² salt pool, several therapy basins, seven saunas ranging from 45 to 95°C, a steam bath, a 25-metre swimming pool, a children's area, a 5-metre diving platform and an 82-metre water slide, making it one of the most visited bathing facilities in northern Germany.
