In the Zugló district of Budapest, Paskál Gyógy- és Strandfürdő is one of the newest bathing complexes in a capital famous for its centuries-old baths. The story begins in 1965, when a borehole reaching roughly 1,400 metres struck a hot water source flowing at 70°C. The site's name traces back to an 18th-century watermill built by a man named Paschgall György, whose surname was gradually shortened by locals to "Paskál."

The outdoor pool opened in 1989, making it the first newly built open-air bath in Budapest in over four decades. A large indoor wing of around 1,400 m² was added in 2016, featuring a teaching pool, a children's pool and a geothermal sauna. The water, rich in calcium, magnesium and sodium bicarbonate chloride, now feeds eight pools spread across the outdoor and indoor sections.

Insider tip — Paskál Gyógy- és Strandfürdő is one of Budapest's lesser-known thermal complexes in the Rákospalota district, drawing sulfate-rich water from the Pannonian Basin at a comfortable 38°C into both medicinal and recreational pools. Unlike the tourist-facing baths of the city center, Paskál maintains a genuinely local neighborhood character where Hungarian families come for weekend relaxation and pensioners attend weekday rehabilitation sessions. The outdoor strand section is especially vibrant on summer afternoons when the large-diameter pools fill with Budapest swimmers seeking relief from the Pannonian heat.
