Westfalen Therme is a thermal bath in Bad Lippspringe, an East Westphalian spa town in the Paderborn district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, built in the mid-1980s to the design of Heribert Stork and drawing on the iodinated bicarbonated carbonated mineral waters of the Teutoburg Forest foothills that give the town its spa character in the culturally rich landscape of the Paderborn plateau, where the cathedral city of Paderborn and the historical Externsteine rock formation preserve two thousand years of religious and cultural significance. Bad Lippspringe's mineral springs have been used therapeutically since at least the seventeenth century, and the iodine and bicarbonate mineral composition of the waters is particularly associated in German Kur medicine with respiratory and cardiovascular treatments. The Westfalen Therme serves the therapeutic and wellness needs of the Paderborn-OWL region's population in the forested landscape of the Teutoburg Forest, combining the iodinated mineral spring tradition of Lippe with contemporary thermal spa infrastructure.
