Teshio Onsen Yubae, in Teshio on the island of Hokkaido, offers sodium-chloride thermal water at 40°C, with an indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo and a sauna.

Insider tip — Teshio sits at the mouth of the Teshio River — one of Hokkaido's great salmon rivers — where it meets the Sea of Japan. The sunsets here ('yubae' in the onsen's name means 'evening glow') over the Sea of Japan are Hokkaido's finest: the orange light reflecting on the river delta as the salmon run upriver in autumn is a primal northern spectacle. The town produces some of Japan's finest salt from the clean Sea of Japan waters, adding mineral depth to the onsen's coastal sodium-chloride character.
