Ponpira is a thermal spring facility in Hokkaido whose name derives from the Ainu language—the indigenous language of Hokkaido's original inhabitants—with pon meaning small and pira meaning cliff or steep riverbank, preserving in its name the linguistic and cultural heritage of the Ainu people who knew this landscape for millennia before Japanese settlement and who understood its thermal waters as part of the living spiritual geography of the land. Hokkaido's thermal springs emerge from volcanic geology quite different from Honshu's, shaped by the subduction dynamics of the Pacific plate beneath the northernmost island, and Ponpira's waters carry the mineral character of this northern volcanic system. Bathing at a spring whose name comes from the Ainu language is to acknowledge the indigenous knowledge of the land's thermal resources that preceded and informed the Japanese thermal bathing tradition across all of Hokkaido's extraordinary landscape.
