The site's story begins in the early Taisho era, when a mineral spring was discovered in the local Ukkayatantai valley. Believed to have beneficial properties, it was first sold commercially as drinking water under the name 'Tokiwa mineral spring,' before a small makeshift bathhouse was built near the source and later abandoned. It wasn't until 1973 that the Otoineppu village residents' rest center officially opened bathing access.

The water, a sodium chloride-bicarbonate type, rises from a geological layer roughly 150 million years old, dating to the Cretaceous period. Odorless and nearly tasteless, it has a faint yellowish tinge and a notably smooth, silky feel on the skin.
