Insider tip — The Sanada clan — whose ancestral stronghold Ueda Castle defended against Tokugawa forces twice (1585 and 1600) — is celebrated as the greatest tactical family in Japanese history. Sanada Yukimura's legendary defense of Osaka Castle in 1615 made him Japan's 'greatest warrior.' The Fureai Sanadakan community center and onsen celebrates this heritage in the village of Sanada above Ueda, where the clan originated. Nearby Bessho Onsen, Nagano's oldest spa resort and a center for Buddhist pilgrimage, completes the picture of this deeply historical corner of Nagano.
