Set inside the town park of Bad Radkersburg in Styria, this thermal source owes its discovery to chance: an oil-drilling survey in 1927 struck warm mineral water at a depth of 280 metres. The town quickly embraced the find, opening a first sports pool in 1963. A second, deeper drilling in 1978 — two kilometres down — tapped an even richer vein, emerging at 80 degrees and ranking among the most mineral-dense sources in the region.

Since a 2013 redesign by a Vienna architecture firm, the complex spans roughly 3,600 square metres of pools and an eight-sauna village. Visitors come for the relaxed pace as much as for the site's unusual geological backstory, just a short drive from the Slovenian border and the vineyards of the Vulkanland.

Insider tip — Therme Aqualux anchors the spa district of Bad Radkersburg in southeastern Styria, where warm thermal waters rise from a deep aquifer shared with the Slovenian Mura Valley across the border. The complex features a panoramic outdoor pool positioned to overlook the medieval town and Mura river plain below. Waters here are of the classic Pannonian thermal type — mineralized and body-temperature warm at around 40°C. The historic baroque town center is compact and walkable, making a combined thermal and cultural day trip highly rewarding.
