The story of Therme NOVA Köflach is closely tied to the decline of the region's mining industry. In February 1998, the province of Styria asked the municipality of Köflach to put forward plans for economic renewal in the Köflach-Voitsberg basin; the local response floated the idea of a thermal spa. In October 1999, thermal water finally surged up from a borehole drilled to 1,039 metres. The foundation stone was laid on 14 June 2003 before a crowd of about a thousand people, and the hotel and baths opened on 8 October 2004.

The thermal water, an akratothermal spring drawn from the Barbaraquelle in the Piber district, is calcium-magnesium-bicarbonate-sulphate in composition. Born from a bold economic conversion, Therme NOVA turned a coal-mining region into a relaxation destination in western Styria.

Insider tip — Therme NOVA Koflach is a contemporary Styrian thermal spa drawing deep geothermal water warmed by the volcanic heritage of the Eastern Alps. The modern facility serves the industrial Voitsberg district as an accessible wellness destination for local families and visitors to Graz's western hinterland. Multiple indoor and outdoor pools are maintained at different temperatures to suit varied bathing preferences throughout the seasons. The surrounding Styrian Weinstrasse wine region offers excellent post-soak dining options at family-run Buschenschanken just minutes from the spa.
