Insider tip — Okushiri Island in the Sea of Japan was devastated by the 1993 Hokkaido Nansei-oki earthquake and resulting tsunami (198 dead on an island of under 5,000 people), but rebuilt with extraordinary community resilience. 'Kamuiwaki' is the Ainu name for this sacred spring — kamui (divine spirit) waki (side/emerge) — waters that the indigenous Ainu venerated long before Japanese settlers arrived. The Hoyojo recuperation center embodies the island's recovery story: healing waters at Japan's most remote Sea of Japan island, where tuna fishing and coastal beauty sustain the remaining community.
