Negoya-jo Onsen, known as Negoya no Yu, is located in the town of Nakanojo, Gunma Prefecture. Its sulfurous thermal water reaches 43°C (pH 6.5), with an indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo and a sauna.
Insider tip — The Negoya-jo (Negoya Castle) area in the Agatsuma River valley holds the ruins of a mountain castle that controlled the strategic river corridor between the Gunma plain and Nagano's Shinshu highlands. The Negoya no Yu draws sulfurous waters from the same volcanic system as the famous Kusatsu Onsen — Japan's most acidic spring, just upstream in the volcanic highlands. The Yagizawa Dam and reservoir create a striking lake in this volcanic valley, surrounded by the sulfurous steam that characterizes all Agatsuma spring waters.
