Insider tip — Fuki no Yu, the butterbur spring, serves the Kanashima district of Shibukawa City between the Akagi and Haruna volcanic ranges of Gunma where the fuki no to (butterbur bud) heralds spring in the forested valleys each March. Shibukawa was the starting point of the ancient Mikuni Kaido highway ascending to the Echigo mountains, and the city preserves the stone-paved remnants of this mountain road that connected the Kanto plain to the Japan Sea coast through the volcanic gorges of the Agatsuma River valley.
