Unzen Shinyu Onsenkan is located in Unzen, Nagasaki Prefecture, on a volcanic site known for its steaming fumaroles. The sulfurous, slightly acidic water (pH 6.5) feeds an indoor bath, a rotenburo-style outdoor bath and a sauna.
Insider tip — Unzen Shinyu Onsenkan is a thermal establishment with the new sulfurous springs of Unzen (Nagasaki, Kyushu). Unzen is an active volcano in Unzen-Amakusa National Park. The 'Jigoku' (hells) site of Unzen — boiling pools of white mud and steam — is one of Japan's most dramatic geothermal landscapes. In 1991, the eruption of Fugen-dake killed 43 people.
