Unzen Onsen Kojigoku Onsenkan, also in Unzen, Nagasaki, draws its sulfurous water from a spring at 44°C. An indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo and a sauna are on offer.
Insider tip — Kojigoku Onsenkan, the small hell spring hall, takes its place among the named volcanic craters of Unzen where the 1991 Heisei Shinzan pyroclastic flows killed 43 people including volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft — the most deadly volcanic event in Japan modern era. The small hell designation is affectionate compared to the great jigoku hells nearby, and the spring water emerging at the edge of the active crater zone carries the distinctive sulfurous character of live volcanic discharge.
