Baños Termales El Batán

Baños Termales El Batán is a thermal spring site in the Baños district of Lauricocha province in the Huánuco department of central Peru's high Andes, where geothermally heated mineral waters emerge from the Andean cordillera and give the district its very name — Baños — reflecting the central importance of these hot springs to the local community's identity and heritage in a remote Andean province at elevations where the thermal waters offer welcome warmth in the cool and often harsh mountain climate. The Lauricocha province of Huánuco is one of Peru's most archaeologically significant regions, home to the Lauricocha caves where some of the oldest evidence of human habitation in the Americas — dated to approximately 10,000 BCE — was discovered in the 1950s, placing El Batán's thermal spring tradition within one of the continent's deepest inhabited landscapes.
