The pH-2 milky-white baths have been visited since at least the Nara period, and in winter the surrounding forest trees are transformed into frost-covered juhyo ice monsters. The high sulphur content is beneficial for the skin but requires thorough rinsing afterward. Visit at dawn before the ski crowds arrive for a solitary alpine experience.
