Zao Onsen Dai Rotenburo

Zao Onsen Dai Rotenburo is the celebrated open-air communal bath at Zao Onsen, one of the great volcanic spa villages of Yamagata Prefecture in Tohoku, northern Japan. Perched at over 900 metres on the flanks of Mount Zao — an active volcano shared between Yamagata and Miyagi prefectures — this outdoor bath is famed for the dramatic, milky-white sulfurous water that stains its stone basin a vivid rust-ochre over time.

The sulfurous spring flows at a vigorous 44 °C with a characteristically acidic pH of 6.5, producing a sharp mineral scent and a slightly astringent sensation on the skin that regulars associate with Zao's distinct volcanic source. In winter, bathing in the rotenburo while snow settles on surrounding pine trees — the juhyo snow monsters visible on the ridge above — is one of the signature sensory experiences of the Japanese onsen tradition. An essential destination in the Tohoku circuit.
