Insider tip — 'Jusan Bugyo' (十三奉行 — thirteen magistrates) Onsen in Izumi, northern Kagoshima's greatest city — and Japan's premier crane wintering ground. Up to 15,000 hooded cranes (nabe-zuru) and white-naped cranes arrive each October from Siberian breeding grounds, filling Izumi's fields with their bugling calls. The 'thirteen magistrates' name references the Edo-period Satsuma Domain's administrative hierarchy. Watching the cranes from a warm bath here is one of Kyushu's great winter experiences.
