Insider tip — 'Yamabuki no Yu' (山吹の湯 — yellow kerria spring) at Hiraya Onsen in Kashima, Saga Prefecture, on the Ariake Sea coast. Kashima hosts Yutoku Inari Shrine — one of Japan's three great Inari shrines, with its spectacular multi-level architecture rising from the forest. Kashima is also famous for the Gatalympics — the world's most unusual sporting event held on the Ariake mudflats. Yamabuki's golden spring colour recalls the kerria flowers that bloom along Kashima's ancient shrine paths.
