Insider tip — 'Tendo no Yu' (天道の湯 — heaven's way spring) at Kurokami no Mori Onsen (forest of black hair) in Takeo city. Takeo Onsen is one of Japan's oldest, with over 1,300 years of history — the legendary Empress Jingu is said to have bathed here before her Korean campaigns. Takeo City Library, redesigned by Tsutaya/CCC in 2013, became a global icon of library design. The 'black hair forest' name references the ancient camphor trees of Takeo Shrine, their dark canopy arching over 1,000-year-old roots.
