Yamakawa Onsen, also called Hotaru no Sato Onsen, is located in Oguni, Kumamoto Prefecture. This sulfurous spring heats the water to around 45°C, with an indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo bath and a sauna.
Insider tip — 'Hotaru no Sato Onsen' (蛍の里温泉 — firefly village spring) at Yamakawa Onsen in Oguni-machi, near the famous Waita geothermal area — where powerful steam vents are used for 'jigoku mushi' (hell steam cooking) of local vegetables, eggs, and meat. The firefly village name contrasts the gentle bioluminescent insects of the Yamakuni River with the fierce volcanic steam of the Waita zone; this spring lies at the meeting point of the two most beautiful natural phenomena in the Oguni highlands.
