Insider tip — 'Shugojin Onsen' (守護神温泉 — guardian deity spring) in Oguni-machi, near the Waita volcanic zone. In Japanese folk religion, every hot spring has its shugojin — a guardian deity who controls the water's flow and quality. The volcanic springs of the Waita area in Oguni are among Japan's most powerful geothermal expressions: boiling steam vents, bubbling mud pools, and scalding springs that must be cooled before bathing. Naming the spring for its guardian deity is an act of acknowledgment and respect for the volcanic forces at work.
