Insider tip — 'Ichinomiya Onsen Center' — the municipal spa of Aso city's Ichinomiya district, home of the ancient Aso Shrine (阿蘇神社). The Aso Shrine is one of Japan's oldest and most powerful shrines, associated with the volcanic deity Takeiwatatsu-no-mikoto and predating written Japanese history. The shrine's楼門 gate (romon, two-storied gate) was destroyed by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes and has since been painstakingly restored. Bathing in the communal onsen of this sacred volcanic community is participation in 2,000 years of living tradition.
