Kogen no Tennen Onsen, also known as Tsutsuji no Yu, is located in Tsumagoi, in the highlands of Gunma prefecture. Its sulfurous water emerges at 44°C with a pH of 6.5, alongside an indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo and a sauna.

Insider tip — Tsutsuji no Yu, the azalea spring, colours the Tsumagoi highland plateau where Kusatsu volcanic energy warms the earth. The azalea bushes blaze scarlet each June, and in winter the plateau fills with snow for outstanding cross-country skiing before a warming soak in sulfurous spring water.
