Maeda Onsen Kajiroga Yu, in Kirishima, Kagoshima, draws its sulfurous water from a spring at 44°C. An indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo and a sauna round out this mountain bathhouse.

Insider tip — Kajiroga Yu serves the Maeda district of Kirishima City in the volcanic highlands where the 2011 eruption of Shinmoedake sent pyroclastic material 3,000 metres into the sky and shut the Kirishima Skyline road for years. The Kirishima highlands are also where Sakamoto Ryoma and his wife Oryu took Japan first recorded honeymoon in 1866 after the turmoil of the Meiji Restoration preparations — effectively inventing the honeymoon trip tradition in Japan.
