Akatsuki no Yu, in Togari (Iiyama city, Nagano prefecture), draws its character from sulfurous waters heated to 44°C. The onsen offers an indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo bath, and a sauna in a mountain setting.
Insider tip — Akatsuki no Yu, the dawn spring, serves Togari Onsen ski village in northern Iiyama City where the first light of dawn strikes the volcanic ridgelines above the Nakatsunarigawa valley. The Togari ski area at 1,100 metres is one of the highest and snowiest in the Nagano mountain belt, and the volcanic geothermal heat that warms the sulfurous spring also prevents ski runs from closing even during the extreme cold spells that periodically push winter temperatures below minus twenty degrees in this northernmost corner of Nagano Prefecture.
