Bad Saarow owes its reputation to an unexpected discovery: in 1912, bog iron ore was found in the area, and two years later the town's first mud-bath facility opened, drawing on peat from the Wierichwiesen wetlands. This small Brandenburg town, which had already welcomed its first visitors around 1900, was officially granted the title of "Bad" (spa town) in 1923.
Today's SaarowTherme, opened in December 1998 by regional minister Regine Hildebrand, carries this tradition forward, showcasing the natural mud extracted on site, rich in humic acids and minerals, alongside saline water drawn from the Brandenburg subsoil. The site blends a 20th-century bathing heritage with contemporary thermal facilities on the shores of Lake Scharmützelsee.
