Some twenty kilometres from Machu Picchu, in the province of La Convención, the Cocalmayo springs stand out for their clear, transparent water rising from underground sources — a rarity among Peruvian thermal pools, which are often murkier. The complex holds three to four pools depending on the season, fed by water rich in calcium and magnesium.
Located in Santa Teresa, along the alternative route to Machu Picchu popular with trekkers, the site offers changing rooms, showers, a camping area and food stalls. It's best to avoid January through March, the region's rainy season.
