Terme Iwonicz-Zdroj draws chlorurated mineral springs in the Subcarpathian foothills of southeastern Poland, close to the Ukrainian border in a landscape of ancient beech forests, wooden Orthodox churches, and medieval castles that was contested between Polish, Ukrainian, Slovak, and Hungarian cultures across centuries of Jagiellonian, Habsburg, and later Soviet influence. The Subcarpathian region around Iwonicz is part of the Carpathian Wooden Churches trail, whose sixteenth to eighteenth-century Orthodox and Greek Catholic timber churches, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, represent the most complete surviving collection of wooden ecclesiastical architecture in Europe, their icon screens, exterior galleries, and forest settings of breathtaking simplicity. The saline mineral waters of Iwonicz, valued for relaxation and circulatory wellbeing, have been developed into a full spa town infrastructure since the eighteenth century, and the resort's position in the forested hills of the Subcarpathia gives it the character of a Polish mountain spa with a particularly rich ethnographic and religious heritage in the surrounding villages.

Insider tip — The Polish Subcarpathians are the border between Poland and Ukraine — their forests of centuries-old beeches, their medieval castles and their tufted wooden churches are inscribed on the UNESCO list.
