Termas de Alcafache, situated in a scenic valley carved by the Dão river near Mangualde in the Viseu district, is one of Portugal's most picturesquely located thermal spas, where sulfurous springs emerge in a setting of schist cliffs and pine-clad hillsides. The warm sulfurous waters, rich in hydrogen sulfide and trace minerals, are applied in balneotherapy for respiratory, skin, and rheumatic conditions in the medically supervised Portuguese Kur tradition. The surrounding Dão wine country, producing some of Portugal's finest reds, and the proximity of the Caramulo mountain range add considerable scenic and gastronomic interest to a thermal stay at Alcafache.
