Neptun-Olimp is a Black Sea resort complex in the Constanta County of southeastern Romania, built in the 1960s as the exclusive summer retreat of the Romanian communist nomenklatura — Nicolae Ceausescu and the leaders of the Warsaw Pact countries maintained private villas in the forested dunes of Olimp that are now partly open to visitors. The chloride-rich waters of the Black Sea at Neptun-Olimp, notably less saline than the Mediterranean and rich in hydrogen sulfide from the anoxic deep layers of the Black Sea basin, are used in thalassotherapy and balneotherapy programs for rheumatic and cardiovascular conditions. The pine-forested dune landscape, the grand communist-era hotel architecture, and the long sandy beaches of the Romanian Riviera create one of the most historically charged and architecturally distinctive coastal wellness destinations in southeastern Europe.
