Lac Techirghiol Balnear Spa

Lake Techirghiol is an extraordinary hypersaline salt lake on the Black Sea coast of Romania, whose dense chloride-rich brine and famous black mud (nămol) have been part of a bathing tradition since antiquity and are among the most renowned natural peloid resources in the world. The lake's salinity — reaching 90–120 grams per litre, approximately three times the salinity of the Black Sea — creates an exceptionally buoyant bathing environment, and the dense blue-black sapropel mud deposited on the lake floor is extracted and applied in warm pack experiences associated with relaxation, muscular comfort, and well-being of the skin. The Lac Techirghiol Balnear Spa and the associated resort town of Techirghiol have been centres of peloid bathing since the late 19th century, when the renowned qualities of the lake mud were first documented in a famous legend involving a man ('moș Techirghiol') and his donkey at the lake. Today Techirghiol's mud and hypersaline bathing remain among Eastern Europe's most respected and celebrated natural thermal resources, within a long thermal tradition.
