Calan is a town in the Hunedoara County of western Transylvania, Romania, at the edge of the Retezat National Park, where radon and bicarbonate-rich spring waters rise from the Hercynian geological formations of the southern Carpathians and have been part of the local bathing tradition since the Roman period, when settlers in Dacia established bath facilities here during the 2nd century AD. The modern spa facilities preserve a bathing tradition that dates to the era of Roman imperial expansion into the Carpathian basin, when the province of Dacia was exploited for its gold, silver, and mineral wealth. Just 20 kilometres away, the spectacular Corvin Castle (Hunyadi Castle) — the finest Gothic medieval castle in Romania, with its crenelated towers reflected in the River Cerna — and the Dacian-Roman archaeological complex of Sarmizegetusa Regia make the Calan thermal region one of the richest in historical depth in all of Transylvania.

Insider tip — Corvin (Hunyadi) Castle, 20 km away, is the most beautiful Gothic castle in Romania — its crenellated towers are reflected in the moat of the Cerna. Thermal Transylvania and Gothic Dracula in a single region.
