The history of Ocna Sibiului stretches back to salt extraction three thousand years before our era; the Romans later folded the site into their mining network and the famed 'salt route'. Salt miners gained legal privileges as early as the 13th century, and the settlement was raised to a borough in 1346; the last mine, worked since the year 906, closed in 1931. The gradual collapse of the galleries gave rise to fifteen natural lakes, including Lake Brâncoveanu, the Red Lake and the Black Lake, among the saltiest bodies of water in Europe at 415 g/l salinity.

The first resort establishment was founded here in 1845, turning this reclaimed mining landscape into one of Transylvania's most singular lakeside sites, where millennia of industrial memory meet a natural setting shaped by time.

Insider tip — The Black Lake at 340 g/L of salt — total automatic flotation — 10 times saltier than the sea — rinse off thoroughly afterward.
