Terme Lacul Sarat Braila is a saline wellness resort built around a salt lake on the plain of the lower Danube near Braila, where the extraordinarily concentrated chlorurated brines and mineral mud of Lacul Sarat have been part of the local bathing tradition since the late nineteenth century, when the lake first attracted attention for its exceptionally high mineralisation. The Danube Delta begins just east of Braila where the river divides into its three main distributary channels before reaching the Black Sea, and the delta's five thousand square kilometres of channels, reed beds, and floating islands constitute the only fully protected river delta in Europe and one of the largest wetland ecosystems on the continent. A thermal stay at Lacul Sarat combined with a boat excursion into the delta's pelican colonies, willow tunnels, and ancient fishing communities represents an encounter with the wildest remaining landscape of the Pontic plain.

Insider tip — Terme Lacul Sarat Braila takes its name from a saltwater lake near the Danube plain town of Braila, whose hypersaline waters allow easy flotation similar to the Dead Sea. The flat Wallachian landscape and the proximity of the Danube floodplain give the setting a distinctive steppe character. The sodium-chloride mud from the lakebed is a prized mineral resource.
