Al-Lith Hot Springs in the Al-Bahah highlands above the coastal city of Al-Lith on the Red Sea in Mecca Province emerge from the ancient granite of the Hejaz mountains at temperatures of 35–42°C, forming natural warm bathing pools in the rocky landscape of the Tihama escarpment zone where the Arabian mountains descend steeply to the Red Sea coastal plain. The chloride iodine mineral composition of the waters reflects the proximity of marine sedimentary layers in the geological formation, and the springs have been used by local communities for skin conditions and rheumatic ailments for generations. The Al-Bahah highlands region, rising to 2,500 metres above the hot Tihama coast, is one of Saudi Arabia's greenest and most fertile areas, with terraced agriculture, juniper forests and a cool climate that contrasts dramatically with the lowland heat. The Red Sea reef ecosystems just below, among the world's finest for diving, add a marine dimension.
