Ain Um Sabaa (Al-Ahsa)

Ain Um Sabaa is a natural oligomineral spring in the Al-Ahsa oasis of the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, one of the remarkable freshwater and lightly mineralised springs that have sustained the world's largest date palm oasis across millennia of human settlement in what would otherwise be one of the world's most extreme desert environments. The spring is part of the extensive natural water resource network of Al-Ahsa — a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognising the outstanding cultural landscape of this ancient oasis whose name appears in the earliest records of Arabian civilisation — where the combination of artesian spring water, traditional irrigation engineering, and date palm cultivation created a civilisational anchor point in the vast Rub' al Khali (Empty Quarter) desert of the eastern Arabian Peninsula. The Al-Ahsa oasis landscape, with its towering date palms, traditional qanat channels, ancient archaeological sites, and the ongoing cultivation by local Ahsa families of hundreds of date palm cultivars representing generations of agricultural knowledge, provides a deeply culturally embedded context for the natural spring waters that have defined this extraordinary oasis for ten thousand years.
