Gustafsberg Spa Uddevalla

Gustafsberg Spa Uddevalla is a marine wellness centre in the Gustafsberg archipelago near Uddevalla on the Bohus coast of western Sweden, where iodine-rich sea water from the granite island landscape of the Bohuslan skargard has been used for sea bathing in a tradition going back to the nineteenth century when Gustafsberg was established as one of the first purpose-built bathing resorts on the Swedish west coast. The Tanum municipality, twenty kilometres to the north, preserves the most extensive and best-documented collection of Bronze Age rock carvings in northern Europe, with around 1,500 individual panels cut into the smoothed granite outcrops depicting ships, warriors, animals, and ritual scenes that record three thousand years of Scandinavian maritime culture between 1700 and 500 BC, and which earned the Tanum rock art its UNESCO World Heritage designation in 1994. The iodine-rich waters of Gustafsberg, combined with the granite coast's characteristic smell of seaweed, salt, and rock warmed by the long Nordic summer sun, create a marine wellness experience that is distinctly Bohuslanian in its sensory character, shaped by the same geological and maritime culture that drove the Bronze Age peoples to carve their world in enduring stone.
