Smrdáky is a small Slovak spa village in the Záhorie lowland, renowned since the 19th century for its remarkably potent sulphurous mineral waters. The springs emerge at around 14°C and carry one of the highest concentrations of hydrogen sulphide in Central Europe, earning the village its rather candid name — smrdáky means 'stinky place' in Slovak. These sulphur-rich waters have long been associated with skin care in the regional thermal tradition, attracting visitors from across the region. The tranquil woodland setting and old-fashioned cure-hotel atmosphere give Smrdáky a distinctly nostalgic charm that larger spa towns have long since lost.
